On February 6, 2004, Deputy Consul General Qiu Xuejun was invited to attend a press conference hosted by the office of California Assembly Speaker pro tempore Hon. Leland Yee, for the upcoming visit by China's Shaolin Martial Arts Troupe.
The group will perform on March 21, 2004 at San Francisco's Masonic Center. It will be their only performance in the Bay Area.
"San Francisco is home to Shaolin," said Assemblyman Yee. He told the reporters that the abbot of Shaolin temple visited the State Capitol years ago, and members were very much honored by his presence. He led a delegation to China in December last year, and visited Shaolin again. Now is his turn to invite the Shaolin people to San Francisco and ntroduce them to the wide American audience. The Assembly will honor the event by proclaiming March 21st the Shaolin Martial Art Day in California.
Deputy Consul General Qiu told the reporters that Shaolin martial art is a very unique part of Chinese culture. More and more people around the world are fascinated by it. The Consulate will do what we can to make this performance successful. It will surely promote the relationship between China and California.
