Chinanews, Zhenzhou, Feb. 27 – In order to standardize and promote orthodox Shaolin martial arts, the Dengfeng Municipal Administration of Sports in Henan will invite some martial arts experts to offer a 10-day training program to some 300 martial arts coaches. The program will start on March 6.

In recent years, many domestic and overseas Chinese pick up the old tradition of practicing martial arts. However, there are currently various kinds of martial arts practiced in society under the name “Shaolin”. Some of these martial arts are far different from conventional Shaolin style and hamper the sound development of conventional Shaolin Kongfu.

People in the Dengfeng Municipal Administration of Sports said the program would focus on boxing, weapon exercising, and duel events. Those who pass the training will have a chance to take referee job at various martial arts competition events in Dengfeng and if possible, become the referee of some grade-three martial arts competitions.

Historical records show that Shaolin martial arts have all together 360 branches handed down from previous generation. Many of these martial arts suffer from a heavy loss in war time period. There are now about 100 branches kept in the Shaolin Temple and many others scatter in folk in Dengfeng city.

Dengfeng, known as the hometown of Chinese martial arts, is the location place of Songshan Shaolin Temple, where Chinese orthodox Shaolin martial arts originated. In Dengfeng, there are now over 80 martial arts halls where about 50,000 people practice Shaolin martial arts. Regarded as the “world’s largest martial arts village”, Dengfeng city attracts people from both home and abroad to come here to learn martial arts ever year.
